As soon as he ended his successful collaboration with DJ Mustard that resulted in epic debut My Krazy Life, YG dropped an album that keeps all the grime elements, but also significantly changes the sonar texture of this rapper. Still Brazy is an old school G funk rap album pretending to become one of the best records of the year. It sounds like it has been kept frozen via cryonics for 20 years and now it is reanimated, melting on the music scene.
Pop culture is abundant with pastiche records that regularly come out and stand shoulder to shoulder with the classics. It’s enough to read the titles of the first three tracks (Don’t come to L.A., Who Shot Me, and Word is Bond) to realize you are just one step away from the world you would probably never dare to enter on your own. Thank God there is stereo.
Kendrick Lamar earned his spot in the hall of demiurges with his untitled.unmastered album highly influenced by Miles Davis. While his righteous angst reduces guilt trips of anxious while people, here we are dealing with something much more specific. YG invites you to the epicenter of the problem. It feels so intimate you have a feeling you could receive a bullet in your head any minute. The vicarious feeling seems extremely real.
Still Brazy has one pensive question that serves as a summary of this raw and addictive album. Will The Truth Really Set You Free? After these confessions from the streets of Compton, you get the feeling like the answer is no. Is the truth only one of the headlines in the newspapers? Is it even relevant in modern world? Anyhow, it is good we have someone to ask that question.
I am very picky when it comes to rap, because it is not my favorite genre. But If I tell you this is the absolute must of 2016, then go and quest for truth with YG.
